In an effort to recognize the accomplishments and efforts of a community contributor who goes “above and beyond,” the Mason Schools Foundation established the Campbell Family Founder’s Award in honor of Ken and Joan Campbell—whose generosity, innovation and vision led to the creation of the Mason Schools Foundation. Four community members were nominated for the prestigious award, which was presented to award recipient Michelle Krugh during the Mason Schools Foundation Gala on October 1. All of the nominees were honored for their enormous contributions on behalf of Mason City Schools students.
2011 Award Recipient
Michelle Krugh, Mason Intermediate Guidance Counselor
About Michelle: “Michelle plays an important role in running Mason Intermediate’s morning Breakfast Club for students in need, setting up Girls’ Circle which pairs high school girls with sixth grade at-risk girls for mentor relationships, and coordinating and attending the summer clothing, school supply and food donations for families in need. Michelle was ‘the salve’ that helped heal many wounded hearts following the death of Associate Principal Dave Segrist. Her efforts went above and beyond, and were especially extraordinary knowing that she was grieving, too.”
2011 Award Nominees
Jill Hartsock, Mason Heights ACT teacher
About Jill: “Jill is constantly adapting to meet the needs of all of Mason Heights students’ many talents—whether they are identified as gifted learners or not. She believes in each student individually and recognizes each child’s unique talents while working to make each student’s learning experience unique and challenging. Jill is always adding new responsibilities, and coordinates the entire recycling program for Mason Heights with the help of her ACT students.
Tina Johnson, Parent Volunteer
About Tina: “One would be hard-pressed to find a more dedicated volunteer than Tina Johnson. Perhaps most remarkable, even after Tina’s own children left Western Row eight years ago, Tina has faithfully continued to volunteer in Karen Vome’s science classrooms each week—assisting with all the labs and Western Row’s recycling program. Tina has gone out of her way to help so many children that many parents will never know that she has helped. It is way past time for her to be recognized for all the contributions that she has made to the Mason City Schools community.”
Dale Moberly, Mason Intermediate 6th grade teacher
About Dale: “Dale is on the cutting edge of learning in Mason City Schools—whether it is helping his students (and other staff members) incorporate technology or by promoting community service. For the last five years, Dale organized and implemented several community out-reach opportunities each trimester for both parents and students. His impact in the classroom is enormous, but the more lasting impact may be the legions of former students who value community service and understand their responsibility to give back.”
